Quick Buzz:Husk(After Dark 2011)
I am sucker for Scarecrows and especially Scarecrow flicks which I feel there clearly aren't enough of.So I saw this dvd which was from the After Dark 2011 lineup and saw that it featured Scarecrows so of course I purchased it.Seeing as the After Dark Films themselves have mostly been forgettable,I didn't have much expectations going in.So how is it??
Well the first act has your basic horror movie setup we've seen countless times.A group of five teenagers crash their car in the middle of nowhere surrounded by cornfields and are stranded there with no cell service. To make matters worse one of them is missing. That leaves 3 guys,Brian,Scott and Chris, and one girl Natalie....to wander through these massive cornfields.Soon Natalie goes missing and they find a creepy isolated and apparently abandoned farmhouse harboring some dark secrets.
Like I mentioned earlier, once Husk gets past the generic set up it does offer some interesting ideas. One being that the characters are safe in the farmhouse, kind of like a base, but susceptible for the prey of evil scarecrows once they enter the cornfields.Turns out these scarecrows build their own burlap army with their victims.
The other interesting idea is director Brett Simmons actually attempts to create a decent back-story and does so with flashbacks while the action is occurring.
The acting was decent for a straight to dvd horror movie and Natalie(Tammin Sursok) was pretty damn cute.
So... Husk has some creepy images but nothing that actually happened was really disturbing.Too much has been seen and done before and too much of it a bit dull. All in all its a good late night time waster.

Buzz:Scream 4
Director:Wes Craven
Writers:Kevin Williamson
Cast:Neve Campbell,Courtney Cox,David Arquette,Emma Robrets,Hayden Panettierre
Acting:B+
Entertainment:B+
Rewatchabilty:B+
Overall:B+
After an 11 year hiatus,Ghostface is back on the screen hacking and stabbing people while having an all to good time.Scream 4 is much more violent and much more witty and clever than 2000's Scream 3 and I would say it's even a tad better than Scream 2 in that its brings the action back to Woodsboro, where it all began in the first place.
The Plot:Sidney Prescott has written a book called "Out of the darkness" on her surviving the murders and how she dealt with all and eventually overcame her struggles, and is back in town to promote it and do a signing.Of course as soon as she returns murders occur and Ghostface comes out to play, this time going after Sid's cousin Jill's(Emma Roberts) friends.Of course Gale Weathers and Dewey are there as well..and married now. So the Big three are once again brought together to inevitably solve another mystery. Is this finally the movie where one of the big 3 isn't so lucky???go see it and find out.
The Movie takes stabs at everything from reboots to Saw,torture-porn document yourself flicks to the social media nowsdays ala facebook twitter, text messaging and unearned fame.It works well for the most part and Williamson, who wrote most of this balances the idea's well with no going to overboard stuffing down on throat like some films do.
The film also ratchets up the gore and Ghostface himself leaves a lot more carnage. With her insides on the outside. The humor is also back to the original's form.
With the Big three kind of having there own story, before everything connects we learn a little about the new characters.Jill reminds Sid of Sid when she was younger, she's also having problems with her ex-boyfriend Trevor(Hellllo Billy Loomis maybe).Of course there are her friends Kirby(Hayden Panettierre) Olivia(Marielle Jaffe) and film geeks Robbie(Erik Knudsen) and Charlie(Rory Culkin) who seem a little bit too obsessed with horror movies,in particular the Stabs movies.Could it be one of them responsible for the murders? All these characters come across as pretty likable with Kirby being the most memorable, yet they still didn't live up to the originals characters.
Besides that we get to meet another new interesting character,Deputy Judy Hicks(Mary Shelton) who seems a bit off and a bit obsessed with Dewey and even a bit obsessed with Sidney.
As per typical scream fashion, there are a bunch of red herrings yet I think Craven and Williamson still were able to shock us with the reveal and the motive.I thought it worked really well, and the reveal was the best since the original.
So Scream 4 is highly entertaining, clever and pretty violent, and it brings everything we love about the Scream franchise back to the lime-light.Its easily the best sequel of the franchise and hopefully this gains some new followers from this next generation

Scream 4 killer(s) prediction
This is pretty much spoiler free and is just my prediction based on trailers, pics and a couple other facts.
The Scream franchise has always been a favorite of mine, with the first Scream being among my favorite horror movies of all time,I think it's almost a perfect slasher whodone it film with great scares, tension and characters. The opening scene is just classic as well.Scream 2 was good but couldn't come close to the original and 3 was just not my cup of tea.I only killer I guessed right was Micky from the second film so maybe Im not the best to make guesses but here goes.
Obviously neither Sid,Gale or Dewey are going to be the killers,it would make no sense.
Kirby is played by Hayden Pannetierre and from the looks of it will be a newer styled Tatum. Then of course there is the geeky film student..a new Randy, but Micky already was a film student although not a geek and turned out to be the killer so i dount they'd go that road again.Marielle Jaffe plays Olivia and from the looks of it..won't make it to far in the film so that brings me to
JILL(Played by Emma Roberts)
who of course is Sid's cousin and imo the perfect and most unexpected character to be a killer and thats why it makes so much sense.Think Emma Roberts is a well known Nickelodeon child star, very friendly and very pretty, people associate her with the bright side of life.So what better to person to make the killer than her??People would not see it coming, most wouldn't.Not to mention from one trailer where she conveniently gets cut on the wrist and another where she watches from a window as her friend is terrorized by ghost-face aka her companion who could be her boyfriend.
Think also a female killer would be perfect in todays world, yes Scream 2 had Mrs Loomis but this would take it to a whole nother level in that it's Sidney's own blood responsible for all this carnage, not some stupid half brother.
take a look at this picture as well..does she not look a little off
just me making some predictions..time we tell!

Buzz:Paranormal Activity 2
Director:Tod Williams
Writers:Michael R Perry,Christopher Landon
Cast:Katie Featherston,Micah Sloat,Brian Boland
Acting:B
Entertainment:B
Rewatchability:B
Overall:B
Paranormal Activity was a low-budget flick that had a lot of hype before it hit the theaters. For the most part it lived up to the hype,it did have creepy scenes and some legitimate jump scares, though it definitely took its time building up the tension, while never really showing the viewer what entity we are dealing with.It works cause I always say it's scarier what we imagine is making the noise. And 2 follows in those footsteps while also tying up some of the story-lines from the first.
Cause it turns out Paranormal Activity 2 is a prequel and at the start of this one Micah and Katie are still alive and well.Instead this one focuses on Katie's sister Kristi, her husband Dan and their newborn baby Hunter. Also with them is 17 yr old Ali who is Dan's daughter from a previous marriage.Oh and the family dog.
After their house is ransacked one day without anything being stolen Dan decides to put in a camera system to watch over the house and for the well being of their new-born son Hunter and to appease his wife.Of course mysterious things start to happen much to the disbelief of Dan.
So now we know what's going to happen next,so anyone who didn't like the first I suggest staying clear of this cause its more of the same.
We are treated to and endless cycle of footage from the camera mostly consisting of the pool, the stairwell, the bedroom, the baby's room and the lounge. We stare at this footage looking out for anything unusual.Did the door just move a little?did the curtain just ripple a little?what was that noise? It's a approach that like I said turns some people off because not much happens.....right away. But to me its effective cause one part of you wants there to be something that scares you or surprises you but the little kid inside of you is really hoping nothing happens.
When the shit really hits the fan it's well worth the wait,as one scene in particular really had me jump straight up almost into my ceiling.PA2 definitely upped the stakes and jump scares but the one part I think i enjoyed the most was that it offered insight into why all this was happening to this one family. It did it rather cleverly too and with it even helps shed light on the original.
I won't give away the ending but it's definitely unexpected but done pretty well and almost as effective as the first.
I won't give away the ending but it's definitely unexpected but done pretty well and almost as effective as the first.
The acting is rather decent here though I feel Katie and Micah, the leads from the original had a little more personality and were a tad more interesting.Though Micah did get on my nerves at times.
So in closing.PA2 is a very worthy follow up to Paranormal Activity, relying on slow buildup much like PA.For any fan of the first this is definitely worth a watch.

Buzz:Hatchet 2(2010)
Director:Adam Green
Writer:Adam Green
Cast:Danielle Harris,Tony Todd,Kane Hodder
Acting:B
Entertainment:B+
Rewatchability:B
Overall: B
Hatchet 2 is much like the first Hatchet, maybe even a little more over the top with some of the gore and kills but for the most part it's a pretty fun ride.Chances are if you liked the first one you will have no problems with the second installment of Victor Crowley.
Taking place right after the event so of the first Hatchet,Mary Beth Dunston, this time played by horror-loving Danielle Harris, has escaped Victor Crowley and taken in by Swamp recluse Jack Cracker who immediately kicks her out upon learning who she is and what her daddy did(which will lead to a back story on the real origins of Victor Crowley and how Maryy Beths dad had a part in) but not before he re-directs Mary to go see Rev Zombie.
**Jack Crackers death is one of the best in the movie**
>Mary Beth wants revenge on Crowley for killing her family,Zombie eventually agrees to take her back to the swamp under one condition...she bring her uncle with her.Meanwhile Zombie rounds up a team to take along with them.
Along for the ride are with Rev Zombie and Mary Beth are Justin(Parry Sheen),the bad ass Trent(R.A Mihailoff),Layton(AJ Bowen),and his ex-mistress Avery(Alexis Peters),3 back-woods rednecks,Cleatus(Ed Ackerman),Chad(David Foy) and John(Rick McCallum),and the ever annoying Vernon(Colton Dunn). And of course Mary Beth's Uncle Bob(Tom Holland).Little does this group know that rev Zombie has his own reasons for going on this dangerous journey.
Can this group survive the menace of Victor Crowley or will they become more victims for his legend to grow?
So how are the characters? They are not quite as memorable as some from the first, most notably Joel David Moore.I really felt this movie was missing a male counterpart to Mary Beth that you actually cared about.Danielle Harris does a nice job taking over for Tamara Feldman here, she plays the shaken yet brave Mary Beth quite convincingly and is very likable for the most parts despite being a little whiny at times.
Rev Zombie played by Candyman legend Tony Todd does a real good job her as well,he commands the screen every time he is on and that deep voice is still memorable. It was also nice to see Todd back in the horror genre and with a much bigger part as well.
Other than those two, everyone else is mostly forgotten though I did dig Layton's(AJ bowen from House of the Devil) small part.
Vernon perhaps was the most annoying and I really didn't find him all that funny,I actually was wondering when he would die.
On a side note we get cameos from Lloyd Kaufman and Mike Mendez, plus a cool little reference to Leslie Vernon and nice little nod to Frozen.
So the deaths? The kills are ratcheted up here and very over-the top,Green does things with the body that are so outlandish you can only sit back and have a good time with it.There are quite a few memorable ones. The best ones being the intestine decapitation scene and the sex-body gyrating scene(see it for yourself).
And Victor Crowley?I never really cared for his look, even in the original,I find him to be more cartoony than anything and definitely not scary.I understand what Green was going for in both films but I would have preferred if they made him a bit more realistic looking and not like some giant kidney bean. But he is pretty vicious and it more of a ticked off mode here.
All in all Green does a good job with another nod to the campy 80s style slashers here.Watch it for it's gore, watch it for it's death scenes and watch to escape the real world for 90 minutes.
